Julio Cascante Called Up To Costa Rican Men's National Team
La Federación Costarricense de Fútbol (the Costa Rican Football Federation) today announced its roster for the September FIFA international window, with Austin FC defender Julio Cascante named to the 24-player list.
“I’m honored and excited to receive this call-up,” said Cascante. “Every player dreams of having the opportunity to represent their country and I’ll be very proud to wear the colors of Costa Rica.”
Cascante, 29, joined Austin FC ahead of the Club’s inaugural season in 2021 and signed a contract extension through the end of the 2025 season in April 2023. He has made 82 MLS appearances for Austin across the regular season and playoffs, contributing eight (8) goals and 12 assists. His seven (7) goal contributions in the 2022 season were tied for the most among all MLS center backs.
“We wish to congratulate Julio on earning the chance to represent Costa Rica,” said Austin FC Sporting Director Rodolfo Borrell. “We look forward to watching him compete for Los Ticos in September.”
Cascante will join Costa Rica for an international friendly match against Saudi Arabia on September 8, to be played at St. James’ Park in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The native of Puerto Limón, Costa Rica made one (1) previous appearance for his country in a friendly against Nicaragua on December 15, 2015, and also made three (3) appearances for the Costa Rica U-23 national team as a young player.
Cascante will depart Austin FC following the team’s MLS match against New England Revolution on September 2, and return prior to the Club’s home fixture vs. Portland Timbers on September 17.
